Fashion Situation / MÁRIA ŠTRANEKOVÁ, MAYAMAY 2019

The "Fashion Situation" format showcases talents in Slovak fashion design and is linked to the Bratislava Design Week festival. Curator: Ľubica Hustá.

The “Mayamay 2019” collection is a continuation of the previous “Come to the Light” collection. It embodies contemporary concepts such as upcycling, minimalism, timelessness, authenticity, and naturalness – hallmarks of the designer’s work. Each piece is complemented not only by a “Life Care Instruction” tag—a play on the concept of care – but also by gold-plated symbols and the designer’s original jewelry. The garments in the collection are designed to be “exceptional in everyday life.”

“I wouldn’t want folklore to be just a fashion trend or a marketing ploy, an ornament applied to a T-shirt, but rather to draw on the integrity of craftsmanship; it should be a style—that which is our DNA. It’s important to go back to basics in working with materials. I want to bring the craft into the present. I’m naturally most interested in textiles. Wool, flax, hemp—these were so natural to our region, yet today, for example, local farmers would rather burn the wool than process it. The current increase in EU support for the creative industry aims to build on these traditions; only time will tell the results.”
