Exhibition / MARIÁN LAŠŠÁK
Medium Gallery, Hviezdoslavovo námestie 18, 5 June – 7 July 2019, curator: Zdeno Kolesár
With Probes [Sondy], Marián Laššák builds on previous works thematizing the intersections of design and architecture. The current collection deepens the tension between reality and illusion, between two and three dimensions, between real functionality (this time it is lighting fixtures) and semantic accents. The probes evoke connections with archaeological or restoration unearthing of historical layers. They can be seen as abstracted images of time, but also as concrete references to our past with a nostalgic touch. They offer a contrast of luminous surfaces and photographic reproductions of carefully selected details of real industrial and private interiors of recent history, made in collaboration with photographer Marko Horban. They cite oil painted walls, coloured lines delineating painted surfaces, plinths and lime plasters in factories and schools, and the roller patterns that every self-taught decorator once mastered when enhancing a domestic abode. They encourage us to smile, to reflect on our real-socialist past and our consumerist present, but also to reflect on the unstoppable passage of time.
